On the 10th of June 2013 was adopted the Directive on the safety of offshore activities related to oil and gas amending Directive 2004/35/EC. The new provisions (initially proposed as regulation) are designed to ensure the highest standards of safety for offshore European platforms  reducing as much as possible the occurrence of accidents related to the exploration and production of hydrocarbons and limiting their consequences, through effective and timely interventions for the marine environment and coastal populations.
In addition, the Directive provides rules for transparency and sharing of information and cooperation between Member States in terms of risk prediction and emergency response across borders.
The new directive, which comes into force on the twentieth day following its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union and due to be transposed by the Member States within two years, also apply to existing installations and ongoing activities.
