Redefined marine areas open to hydrocarbons exploration

With the Ministerial Decree of the 9th of August 2013 the Ministry of Economic Development has redefined marine areas within which it is possible apply for the prospection, exploration and production of hydrocarbons in the implementation of the provisions already introduced by art. 6, paragraph 17 of the Legislative Decree no. 152/2006 as amended by Law 7 August 2012 no. 134 "Urgent measures for the growth of the Country."

According to the rules in force, which provide for the prohibition of these activities in the Tyrrhenian sea in the zones placed within twelve miles from the coast along the entire coastline and the outer perimeter of the national coastal and marine protected areas, and that simultaneously identify a marine area of the Balearic sea, contiguous to exploration areas in Spain and France (Zone E), the areas open to the submission of new applications have a total extension of 139.656 sq km, compared with the previous extension of 227.160 sq. km.
